Google is an American multinational technology company that focuses on online advertising technologies, a search engine, software and hardware, among other Internet related services and products. It’s no secret that Google is considered one of the biggest companies in the world. But, did you know that it was initially only a research project of two PhD students?
Back in 1996, the Google concept began as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in California. The domain name “Google.com” was actually registered in 1997, and the company was incorporated in 1998 with a contribution of $100,000 from Andy Bechtolsheim.
At that time, the company was based in the garage of Susan Wojcicki. Their first employee was Craig Silverstein, a PhD student at Stanford. In 1999, the firm moved its offices to Palo Alto, California.
The company is now worth an estimated $420 billion. Page is worth $103.6 billion, while Brin is worth $100.2 billion, according to estimates by Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index, making them two of the richest people in the world.
