The famous lights were switched off during WW2, and since then the Advertising Association had the electric sign displays switched off until 8pm as a tribute to John F Kennedy when he was assassinated in 1963, for the funeral of Winston Churchill in 1965, then again for Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.
