Many nutritionists and fitness experts say that practicing intermittent fasting when you want to build muscle mass is a bad idea, especially if you are training for a marathon or doing CrossFit workouts. In fact, for more energy, fitness specialists recommend eating something before or after exercising.
“During a hard workout, you will put little tears in your muscle and deplete your glycogen stores,” says Kacie Vavrek, RD a sports medicine registered dietitian at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “A recovery meal within 1-2 hours plus regular meals every 3-4 hours after will help to replace glycogen stores and repair and rebuild muscle throughout the day.”
So, if you want to build muscle mass, it’s important to eat a certain amount of protein at different times throughout the day, but intermittent fasting is a bad idea because it involves other intervals in which you can eat.

Even though it has been proven that intermittent fasting can be effective for some people who want to lose a few extra pounds, we can’t say the same thing about those who suffer from gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, indigestion, bloating and so on.
People who have any of those gastrointestinal problems need to understand that intermittent fasting can worsen your symptoms and affect the normal activities of the digestive system. Moreover, after a long fasting cycle, people tend to eat large meals which can be harmful to their digestive system as well.
