Intermittent fasting is a popular method used by people who want to lose a few extra pounds or for religious purposes in some cultures. The benefits of intermittent fasting are debatable, as some researchers say that this weight loss method can improve your overall health, but there are also medical experts who don’t recommend it, especially for people who suffer from certain diseases or have a chaotic lifestyle. 

According to LA-based nutritionist Patricia Bannan, MS, RDN, “intermittent fasting causes glucose (sugar) concentrations to decrease and lipolysis (fatty acid oxidation) to increase significantly during the first 24 hours, which helps the body break down stored fat.”

Even though this weight loss strategy is extremely popular these days, it’s very important to remember that while something is good for someone, may not be good for you as well. That’s why it’s essential to talk to your doctor before changing your diet or lifestyle.  

There are certain weight loss diets that involve fasting and this practice can adversely affect your health, especially if you are prone to developing some diseases. The truth is that intermittent fasting is really effective for people who want to lose extra pounds, but it’s certainly not for everyone.

You experience insomnia

Did you know that people who have sleeping problems should never try this famous weight loss method? Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things that you have to take into consideration if you want to improve your overall health. In other words, if you want to boost your immune system, well-being, mental and physical health, you should sleep better at night. 

But if you try intermittent fasting – namely that you have to deprive your body of food at certain time intervals, you won’t get enough sleep. The explanation is that – if you go to bed hungry – your body will send signals to your brain, making it think that you are awake and this can lead to insomnia. 

When you try intermittent fasting, your blood sugar level drops, and unfortunately, it can be a factor that wakes you up in the middle of the night, interrupting your sleep. Sudden wake ups in the middle of the night (especially during the rapid eye movement cycle (REM) when your mind is storing information into memory) can negatively affect your health. According to medical experts, people who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to develop stress, anxiety, depression and liver disease.

You’ve suffered from eating disorders

Eating disorders are actually a mental condition that causes unhealthy eating habits. Studies have shown that people who suffer from eating disorders are actually dissatisfied with their bodies or find comfort in food when they are sad. The most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, purging disorder and so on. 

However, according to medical experts, people who’ve suffered from eating disorders should never try intermittent fasting. Fasting is not a good idea in this case, as it encourages food restriction and limit eating intervals and it can be a trigger for eating disorders. 

That being said, it’s very important to listen to your body and meet its needs. Your health is the most important thing, so you should take care of it. Of course, it’s crucial to eat healthy foods and follow a balanced diet, full of all the essential nutrients for your body to work properly, but don’t try to lose weight in an unhealthy way, especially if you have had an eating disorder.

You want to build muscle mass

Many nutritionists and fitness experts say that practicing intermittent fasting when you want to build muscle mass is a bad idea, especially if you are training for a marathon or doing CrossFit workouts. In fact, for more energy, fitness specialists recommend eating something before or after exercising. 

“During a hard workout, you will put little tears in your muscle and deplete your glycogen stores,” says Kacie Vavrek, RD a sports medicine registered dietitian at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “A recovery meal within 1-2 hours plus regular meals every 3-4 hours after will help to replace glycogen stores and repair and rebuild muscle throughout the day.”

So, if you want to build muscle mass, it’s important to eat a certain amount of protein at different times throughout the day, but intermittent fasting is a bad idea because it involves other intervals in which you can eat.

You have gastrointestinal problems

Even though it has been proven that intermittent fasting can be effective for some people who want to lose a few extra pounds, we can’t say the same thing about those who suffer from gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, indigestion, bloating and so on. 

People who have any of those gastrointestinal problems need to understand that intermittent fasting can worsen your symptoms and affect the normal activities of the digestive system. Moreover, after a long fasting cycle, people tend to eat large meals which can be harmful to their digestive system as well.

Your job involves focusing and concentration

Your body uses food to create energy and you need it to focus. So, if your job involves intense concentration, you shouldn’t try intermittent fasting. Nevertheless, it’s quite difficult to pay attention to your tasks when you are hungry. 

Some studies have shown that people who try intermittent fasting are more likely to experience fatigue, reduced concentration, poor sleep and anxiety, so, it can affect your productivity when it comes to completing your tasks.

You suffer from diabetes

As you probably know, people who suffer from diabetes should follow a certain diet and take medication because their body can’t produce insulin (a hormone responsible for carrying the sugar to various cells in the body), so they have to keep their blood sugar levels under control.

In this case, intermittent fasting is a bad idea, as this weight loss method can cause hypoglycemia, especially if combined with medication. Diabetics should maintain their blood sugar levels under control if they want to live longer and avoid complications.
