An unfinished portrait of a woman, thought to be Mary Queen of Scots, is revealed behind a 1589 portrait of Sir John Maitland, Lord Chancellor of Scotland, at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Conservator Caroline Rae discovered the unfinished portrait using X-rays during a research project.
