We live in an era where we can’t imagine what life would be like without certain objects. Over time, we have learned that the things we believe to be indispensable have become so due to the human being. In other words, we are responsible for the society in which we live, because we make up the society per se – we blame society, but we are society!
However, when it comes to everyday objects that we all use, you should understand that they have a rich and complex history of development. They have undergone major changes and a lot of experiments to get into the shape they have today and that we all know.
We are human beings, so we have needs and it’s essential to meet them if we want to improve our quality of life, and the truth is that society is constantly changing. Therefore, because we evolve, the objects that we use daily or regularly (and which also make our lives easier) will suffer changes in the future as well – and of course, this phenomenon has been happening for hundreds of years.
However, it’s essential to know that this evolution process of objects is found in ordinary objects as well, such as makeup, shoes, toilets and so on, not only when it comes to technology and electronic devices. Well, the main idea is that everything changes over time and each object has a purpose, namely to help us meet our needs.
That being said, here are some common objects that have drastically changed throughout history. So, read on to find out more info!
Chainsaws
Chainsaws have evolved as much as other objects listed in this article. Woodworking industries have used various tree cutting tools, from axes to saws, which have proven to be more or less efficient in such activities. According to experts, saws were very popular in the 19th century. Not only were they used to cut down trees more efficiently, but doctors also opted for them to cut bones for various medical procedures.
So, from axes to saws, we move slowly towards 1926: the year that embraced a great event, namely the invention of the first electric saw – it had to be used by two people. However, a few years later in 1959, a new type of saw was invented: the chainsaw that can be used by one person and is the one that you see today.
Guns
Any type of firearm played an important role in politics, law enforcement, warfare, hunting and other fields in our society. They were responsible for numerous tragedies. However, its history is very complex.
For example, the functioning principle of cannons and grenades was discovered in 850 AD by Chinese alchemists who used explosive properties of gunpowder to catapult objects. A few years later, people invented handheld firearms from hollow bamboo tubes, gunpowder and small projectiles – they could only be used at short distances.
In the 13th century, people invented flintlock firearms and then they started to use long rifles with twisted grooves in their barrels which caused the lead bullets to spin when fired. Nonetheless, they have changed in recent years becoming much more precise.
Shoes
If we want to buy a pair of shoes, we can find one everywhere, from expensive to cheap models, with or without heels, cut or up to the knees, for running or pole dancing and so on. The truth is that there is a wide variety of shoes that we can have and choose from.
Nevertheless, when shoes were first invented, the purpose of their creator was to make something durable and practical for various activities. For example, during the Stone Age, around 3300 BC, shoes were made of deerskin with bearskin soles and some hay for more support.
Over time, society has gradually evolved and people have begun to turn footwear into a human good that not everyone could afford buying and improving. Therefore, they have become more and more chic and expensive, representing a status symbol.
Makeup
Makeup is a very important element when we talk about the beauty standards of each country and from the past to the present. There are societies that promote makeup as being essential for a woman (and for men, why not) and there are cultures that totally forbid it, valuing naturalness.
However, what many people are unaware of is that makeup was developed during the first Egyptian dynasty in 3100-2907 BC. The people of Egypt used skin care unguents and green powders made of antimony – a mineral used to turn certain substances into powder.
Of course, the way makeup is created nowadays is totally different. Makeup companies use organic substances that are not harmful to the human body, being much more effective in masking certain ‘imperfections’. Unfortunately, some companies test their makeup products on animals, and this is more than tragic. So, before buying makeup, try to make sure that the company doesn’t test their products on animals, because in this way we can stop this cruelty.
Toilets
People who were born recently or those who live in the heart of urbanism in the big cities do not know another variant of the toilet than it is today. Well, for those who don’t know, a few decades ago, toilets were totally uncomfortable or literally a source of bacteria (unfortunately, they are still found in some rural areas of certain countries).
In Rome during 315 AD, toilets were made of wooden seats with holes dug in the ground (as you can see in the photo on the left). They were a source of bacteria because there was no system to cleanse human physiological secretions, so they were absorbed into the ground.
The squat toilets were also famous and not only were they a favorable place for diseases and germs and very uncomfortable, but they were also very dangerous (as you can see in the photo on the right). For example, they dug a hole a few feet in the ground, covered it with wood and left a small hole there to drain the excrement. If that wooden system broke, you could drown in human excrement.
As I said before, these types of toilets are still common in some poor countries, especially in rural areas where people don’t have a water pipe installation or a water tank. So, they have to opt for these types of toilets in their backyard.
Eye Glasses
As you already know, eyeglasses have undergone many changes over time. For example, today we can choose different frames with various colors, models, and innovations to improve our vision and look fashionable at the same time.
The functioning mechanism of eye glasses was first discovered by Romans when they found out that you can maximize the text if you look through the glass. So, as a result, they invented the magnifying glass. However, back in the 1700s, people invented the eye glasses that we use today to improve our vision.
Bikes
The main means of transport in some countries is the bicycle. They are much more efficient, help protect the environment, are non-polluting and fuel free and so on. Yet, the truth is that they didn’t always look the way we know them today.
The first bike design was created by a German in the 19th century. This type of bike didn’t have a chain, brakes or pedals, being mostly a two handed apparatus. In 1860, some French people added wheels, chains and pedals to their bikes, so they invented a new model, but it was still very difficult to manage. Hence, a few years later, in 1885, the bike with wheels of equal size was ready to take over the world.
