Hiding pickles among other Christmas decorations in your Christmas tree is a common tradition in the United States of America. Using pickles as ornaments have been an American tradition since the late 1800s and involve hiding these natural ornaments in your tree so that children can find them and the winner will receive a gift. 

But according to History.com, this ritual grew from a marketing strategy, because Woolworths received a huge shipment of pickle-shaped ornaments and needed a sales pitch.
