We have to admit that people are different and they analyze things through the prism of their own experiences. This is how we see the world and yes, we are subjective in this case.
Moreover, according to the saying ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, individuals tend to appreciate the things that surround them in diverse ways. There are people who will spend a huge amount of money on objects that others consider strange, but who are we to judge them? We live in a world where we have to do what we like and make us feel better, no matter what.
However, many ‘masterpieces’ – that we do not yet understand their meaning – have been sold in the last decade with a lot of money. So, here is a list of some of the best-selling items that you have to see. It depends on your tastes if they are cool or strange! Read on to find out more!
Banana duct-taped to a wall
When it comes to art, people see things differently. There are people who think that Pablo Picasso’s works are amazing, and another category of people who would do anything to have a banana taped to a wall.
Yes, it is true. Someone just bought a taped banana at the Art Basel from Miami with $120.000, can you believe that? The masterpiece titled Comedian was created by an Italian called Maurizio Cattelan. I wonder how much the banana was kept until it was degraded.
The last violin played on the Titanic
One of the saddest stories about Titanic, but memorable at the same time, was the band that played their instruments while the ship was sinking. The band consisted of 8 members and it was led by English musician Wallace Hartley. They played until the end because they knew what was going to happen and they hoped to calm the passengers.
According to CNN, “Hartley’s body was reportedly pulled from the water days after the April 1912 sinking with his violin case still strapped to his back.” However, in 2013, Hartley’s violin was sold for $1.7 million.
J.K. Rowling’s chair
I’m officially a Harry Potter fan. How about you, though? Anyway, the chair of the author of Harry Potter, namely J.K. Rowling was sold at auction in 2016 for $394.000.
The author wrote a letter for the buyer and said that “Dear new-owner-of-my-chair / I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. / My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go, but my back isn’t. / JK Rowling.”
John Lennon’s toilet
Maybe just a real fan of the Beatles will understand this! However, someone just spent $15.000 on a porcelain toilet that belonged to John Lennon.
When John Lennon decided to replace his toilet he told the workers “to put some flowers in it or something”, so the new owner has now a flowered toilet that will set a brighter future for him and make him famous as well.
Queen Victoria’s underwear
If you thought that John Lennon’s toilet was weird enough, then what do you say about some undies owned by Queen Victoria? The underwear was sold in 2015 for $16.300 and they were special because they had her royals initials “VR”, which means Victoria Regina. The undies were kept in a temperature-controlled room and they were also packaged based on various hygiene rules.
“On these particular knickers, there is a chevron section, which is where they were taken up slightly as Queen Victoria got older and essentially she shrunk in stature. That element got the collectors really excited because you can then date them quite specifically to the last 10 years of her life,” said Richard Edmonds.
Elvis Presley’s strand of hair and other valuable items
A strand of hair that belonged to Elvis Presley, also known as the King of Rock and Roll, was sold for $115.000 in 2002. Of course that the buyer was an eager fan. His barber saved a strand of an heir from his beard and kept it in a bag for being sold after the king’s death in 1977.
Other items that were sold at auction were his piano, his peacock jumpsuit and the first recording of a song that was called “My Happiness.”
Marilyn Monroe’s famous white dress
The famous dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in The Seven Year Itch was sold in 2011 for $4.6 million. The white dress is representative of her, because when you say ‘Monroe’ then you will automatically think about her in a dress. The actress was a sex symbol that conquers thousands of hearts and she will always be a reference of beauty.
Justin Timberlake’s leftover slice of bread
Several years ago, after an interview, Justin Timberlake left some leftover of French toast behind and a DJ wanted to make a joke and put up for sale the slices on eBay.
A big fan of the singer, namely a teenage girl named Kathy Summers bought them for $1.025. When people asked her what she is going to do with the burned bread she said that she will freeze-dry it and then sealing it and keeping it in her dresser. Well, she did an important investment, though.
A dead shark
It seems that people have a passion for weird art and they are able to pay huge amounts of money for strange masterpieces. For instance, a piece of art – called The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living – created by British artist Damien Hirst was sold in 2004 for $8 million.
The famous piece of art is composed of a tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde and it weighs 22 tons. Well, people are really weird when it comes to art and they are also subjective. The author, though, is known for his macabre style and his passion for death.
