Researchers estimate there are only about 450 of these Atlantic Ocean-dwelling whales in existence. Commercial whalers had hunted them to near extinction by the early 1890s.

While whale hunting is no longer a major concern, humans are still the greatest threat to right whales.

Entanglement in fishing gear and being struck by vessels are the leading causes of known mortality for the whales. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is working to save them.
