Demonstrators dressed as handmaidens await the arrival of US Supreme Court nominee judge Brett Kavanaugh prior to his appearance before a Senate judiciary committee on Capitol Hill. More than 30 women were arrested for protesting at the hearing over concerns about Kavanaugh’s stances on issues from abortion to LGBT rights, according to the Women’s March, which claimed credit for the protests.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A massive fire engulfs the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro. The fire at the 200-year-old museum began after it closed to the public on Sunday and raged into the night. There were no reports of injuries, but the loss to Brazilian science, history and culture was incalculable, two of its vice-directors said.

Baza, Spain

People covered in black grease take part in the traditional festival of the Cascamorras. Every year a villager from Guadix dresses as an oddball character called Cascamorras and travels the three kilometers to the village of Baza, flanked by a team of representatives, to stage an attempt to recapture the statue of the Pieta virgin before returning to Guadix after three days to be punished by the locals for his failure.

Mumbai, India

Celebrations erupt in Mumbai after the supreme court unanimously ruled to decriminalize homosexual sex in a landmark judgment for gay rights. A five-judge bench at the country’s highest court ruled that a 160-year-old law banning sex “against the order of nature” amounted to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and was unconstitutional.
