Competitors gather backstage as they prepare to take part

The competition began in 1970 and traditionally takes place across Holy Week

It is run by An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha, the largest governing body for competitive Irish step dancing in the world

Solo dancers must qualify for the competition

Adjudicators watch dancers on day three of the championships

Each solo championship consists of three rounds …

… the first round, danced in hard shoes, is either a double jig or hornpipe …

… the second round, danced in soft shoes, consists of either slip jig or reel …

… and final round, comprising recalled dancers who made it through the first two, is a set dance round, performed in hard shoes
