Hamouria, Syria
A Syrian man carries an injured child following a reported regime airstrike in the rebel-held enclave of Hamouria in eastern Ghouta. Terrified residents in the area, where 400,000 people are trapped, have been sheltering in caves, dugouts and basements, as a hail of explosives hit homes, roads and hospitals amid what aid officials warned was an unfolding humanitarian catastrophe.

Douma, Syria
An injured man lies at a medical point in the besieged town of Douma in eastern Ghouta. Russia blocked a UN resolution that would have established a 30-day ceasefire and humanitarian deliveries in eastern Ghouta, saying that widespread reporting of heavy civilian casualties in the besieged area on the edge of the Syrian capital, Damascus, was a product of “mass psychosis”.

Turkish-backed Syrian rebel fighters fire from the town of Salwah, less than 10km from the border between Syria and Turkey, towards Kurdish forces from the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the region of Afrin. Turkey’s foreign minister warned against any intervention by Syrian pro-government forces alongside Kurdish militias in northern Syria, saying it would not prevent Ankara from continuing its month-long offensive.
