Turkish jets bombed the Kurdish-controlled city of Afrin in northern Syria, as president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan promised to expand Turkey’s military border operations against a Kurdish group that has been a key ally of the US in the war on Islamic State.

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh
In the refugee settlement of Balukhali, at least 116 widows and orphans have found shelter within a dense settlement of 50 red tents where no men or boys over the age of ten years old are allowed. Women and girls reportedly make up about 51 per cent of the more than 655,000 Muslim Rohingya refugees who have crossed the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh. Women face a high risk of being victims of human trafficking and sexual abuse, while adolescent girls aged between 13 and 20 face the prospect of being forced into marriages.

Kabul, Afghanistan
A view from a bullet hole shows the Intercontinental hotel that was attacked by Taliban militants. Twenty-two people were killed in the attack, including 14 foreigners, Afghan officials said. Eleven of the foreigners had been identified as working for an Afghan private airline, Kam Air.

Cloned monkeys Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua are photographed at the non-human primate facility at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The two baby macaque monkeys have become the first primate clones to be produced using the same approach that gave rise to Dolly the sheep, researchers have revealed.
