This photo symbolises the impact of chronic kidney disease in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua. The young brothers pictured here lost nearly all of their relatives because of an illness related to heavy labour in hot temperatures.

Captured with a Victrian microscope slide, this is what cat skin and its blood supply look like. The black lines are actually blood vessels, while the yellow ones are fine hairs and whiskers.

Vessels of a healthy mini-pig eye
This 3D image produced from CT scans shows how blood vessels are connected to the eye of a miniature pig. The vessels of only 0.02 mm in diameter are vital for the well functioning of the eye muscles that change the pupil size.

The thin green lines represent nerve fibres produced by neural stem cells (magenta) growing on a synthetic gel. This experiment is part of a study that discovers how the environment affects the growth of nerve fibres.

Surface of a mouse retina
Although it looks very much like a flower, this is actually the zoomed surface of a mouse retina, which took over 400 images combined to be captured perfectly. Scientists are experimenting with mice retina in order to discover new ways to restore damaged retina, as well as to treat vision loss.
