Why Do We Look So Differently In Photos Than In Mirrors?

You dress up to go out somewhere and your mirror reflexion shows a very good-looking person. When you see the photos of the same day, well, things are a bit different. But why does that happen? Aren’t you the same person you were when you looked in the mirror? Why is it we see ourselves so differently than in photos? Let’s find out.

5. Attitude

Think about it: when do you look into a mirror most often? At home, of course. This is also the place where you feel most comfortable with yourself no matter what. Meanwhile, when you’re out somewhere and someone takes a photo, you’ll pose in a certain way that you think makes you look good – when, in reality, it may not! However, if that’s not the case for you, let’s move on to the next reason…

4. Angle

There is no person on this planet that has a symmetrical face. It’s true, for some is less visible than others, but that’s a fact – and it definitely matters to our photos. When you wake up and look at yourself in the morning, at first you see yourself from the same angle every single day – which creates the mental image that this is how you look most familiar. That’s why, when you see yourself photographed from a different angle, it may seem pretty weird, even though it’s still you.

3. Light Balance

When you look into a mirror, it doesn’t matter if it’s cloudy or sunny outside. Your seemingly magical brain knows how to filter the light so that you see yourself the same way you are used to. Meanwhile, a camera will capture and show lightning as it really is, which often leads to different shadows and shapes. When you look into the mirror, light makes absolutely no difference because your brain allows you to see yourself as you know you are.

2. Focusing On a Single Area

No matter what you think, there is one area that your brain focuses on the most whenever you look in the mirror. This leads to an unclear overall mental vision of ourselves and the way we pose or how our body shape looks. Meanwhile, when we look at a photo, we see ourselves as a whole, which may be percieved in a weird way.

1. Mirroring

Believe it or not, this is one of the main reasons why we feel like some of our photos are really strange. When we look into the mirror, (of course) we see the ‘mirrored’ version of how people actually see us. Meanwhile, photos show us as we look in front of others, which may feel pretty weird to us.
