In Photos: The Beauty Of An Underwater Museum

This Januray, Museo Atlantico received its first guests after the official opening. The place introduces over 300 lise-size human figures, which are surrounded by beautiful decorations.

One of the main ideas behind the underwater museum was to get environmental awareness.

One of the installations shows 35 human figures entering a 30 meter long gateway. Overall, the wall weights 100 tones. Artist deCaires Taylor says that this particular artwork was ‘intended to be a monument to absurdity, a dysfunctional barrier in the middle of a vast fluid, three-dimensional space, which can be bypassed in any direction,’

‘Notions of ownership and territories are irrelevant to the natural world. In times of increasing patriotism and protectionism the wall aims to remind us that we cannot segregate our oceans, air, climate or wildlife as we do our land and possessions. We forget we are all an integral part of a living system at our peril.’

The concrete design of this artwork was especially created as a new habitat for the marine life.

The creation of these artworks required help from scuba divers, artists and even visitors and local residents.

The museum is located near the south coast of Lanzarote, in the Bahia de las Coloradas.
